  • This year marks the 20th anniversary of the successful inscription of the "Historic Centre of Macao" on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

  • On this day 20 years ago (15 July 2005), the "Historic Centre of Macao" was officially recognised as a World Heritage Site, becoming China’s 31st entry on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

  • The "Historic Centre of Macao" spans approximately 1.23 square kilometres, comprising a core zone of around 0.16 square kilometres and a buffer zone of about 1.07 square kilometres .

  • Centred on Macao’s old urban district, the site encompasses eight public squares, 22 historic buildings, and the interconnecting streets that weave through these spaces. The buffer zone surrounds the core area, preserving its contextual integrity.

  • To celebrate the 20th anniversary of this milestone of inscription, the Cultural Affairs Bureau has launched a series of events running from now until December. The festivities commenced today with the "20th Anniversary Celebration Ceremony of Macao’s World Heritage Inscription", at the Dom Pedro V Theatre.

  • The Cultural Affairs Bureau will roll out approximately 20 programmes featuring more than 50 activities, including workshops, career and craft experiences, guided tours, and more, fostering citywide participation in commemorating this historic achievement.

  • Through these celebratory initiatives, residents and visitors alike can immerse themselves in the unique charm of the Historic Centre of Macao.

  • The "Historic Centre of Macao" preserves traditional architecture and streetscapes blending Chinese and Portuguese influences, exemplifying Macao’s harmonious fusion of Eastern and Western cultures, religious practices, customs, and lifestyles.

  • Protecting and revitalising heritage sites while safeguarding Macao’s historical and cultural legacy is a shared responsibility and mission for both the Macao Special Administrative Region Government and Macao residents. The splendour captured in these new photographs reflects the collective efforts to uphold this legacy.

  • The "Historic Centre of Macao" is a "golden business card" of the city, and a treasured asset for its sustainable development.
