  • Macao has a Parsee Cemetery, in Estrada dos Parses, near Chok Kong Pavilion.

  • The cemetery was opened in 1829, and was used by a Parsee community that originated from Gujarat on the Indian sub-continent.

  • It is thought Parsee merchants first came to Macao in the 1770s but by the middle of the 19th century, the community gradually relocated to Hong Kong.

  • The Parsee Cemetery is known as “Bak Tou” cemetery in Chinese, or “white-head” cemetery, by locals, because the Parsees commonly wore white headgear.

  • The Parsee Cemetery is listed as one of the city’s Classified Immovable Properties by Macao’s Cultural Affairs Bureau, due to the site’s unique historical and cultural value.

  • The presence of the Parsee Cemetery and the funeral customs of the community are examples of the cultural diversity of Macao and the ability of communities to live in harmonious coexistence.
