The Macao University of Tourism (UTM) held its first flag-raising ceremony and opening ceremony for the 2026/2027 academic year on 21 August. The University warmly welcomed over 1,000 new undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students from Macao, Mainland China, and 14 other countries and regions, seeing the largest intake in its history.

The flag-raising ceremony and the opening ceremony were held at the Taipa Campus and the Macao Tower respectively. UTM Rector Dr. Fanny Vong Chuk Kwan delivered welcoming remarks to new students, expressing her delight in having them join the vibrant and culturally diverse community of UTM. She noted that, in order to equip students for a rapidly changing world, the University has been continuously enhancing its programme offerings. This academic year, UTM has launched two new programmes, the Bachelor of Science in Management and Data Science as well as the Master of Business Administration programme.

Dr. Fanny Vong also shared with the new students an exciting milestone in UTM's development in the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone. The University has now established its presence at the first phase of the Macao-Hengqin International Education (University) Town, where over 200 postgraduate students will experience a cross-border, dual-campus learning model between Macao and Hengqin in the new academic year.

She encouraged the new students to make the most of the resources and opportunities offered by the University, to be bold in exploring new frontiers, and to step beyond their comfort zones. She also reassured them that the entire UTM community stands firmly behind their growth and development.

At the ceremony, the University also presented the UTM Admission Scholarship to outstanding newly admitted students. Scholarship recipients were awarded either a full (100%) or half (50%) tuition waiver for their respective programmes of study.

Additionally, to implement education on the spirit of “loving the motherland and Macao”, and to provide new students with a deeper understanding of national conditions, the University held its first national flag-raising ceremony of the new academic year on the same day, along with several seminars. Among them, officers from the Judicial Police was invited to conduct a seminar on “Cybercrime and Fraud Prevention”, aimed at enhancing students’ vigilance and awareness to prevent them from falling victim to online crimes and scams. Besides, the Labour Affairs Bureau also dispatched officers to offer an educational session on the “Popularisation of Labour Laws”, helping students comprehend relevant regulations and avoid unintentional legal violations.
