Phil Taylor, vice-chancellor and president of the University of Bath in the UK, visited the University of Macau (UM) today (18 September) and was warmly received by Yonghua Song, rector of UM. The two sides held in-depth discussions on international academic exchange, research collaboration, and joint talent development programmes, and identified areas for further cooperation. Taylor also toured UM’s teaching site in the first phase of the Macao-Hengqin International Education (University) Town, where he learned about the university’s learning environment, teaching and research facilities, and laboratories. He was also briefed on the progress and future plans for UM’s campus in the Cooperation Zone in Hengqin.
During the visit, Song gave Taylor an overview of UM’s latest developments, with a particular focus on the progress and future plans for the Cooperation Zone campus. He said that UM is actively advancing the planning and development of its campus in the Cooperation Zone, with the aim of creating an international platform that integrates talent development, research and innovation, and industry-academia collaboration. The Cooperation Zone campus will provide high-level talent and intellectual support for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and the Cooperation Zone. Song added that the Cooperation Zone campus will expand UM’s capacity for teaching and research and create more opportunities for collaboration with leading universities worldwide. He also highlighted the potential for UM and the University of Bath to deepen cooperation in areas such as joint talent development programmes and academic collaboration.
Taylor spoke highly of UM’s progress and plans in the Cooperation Zone. He said that the University of Bath is committed to excellence in teaching and research and that this is an opportune time to deepen cooperation with UM. He noted that the two universities have complementary strengths and shared goals, and that UM’s campus in the Cooperation Zone will provide new opportunities and a broader platform for collaboration. Taylor expressed hope that the two universities would further strengthen cooperation in joint talent development programmes, research innovation, and academic exchange, and deliver meaningful outcomes from their partnership.
Other UM representatives who received Taylor included Yang Zhixin, executive deputy director of University of Macau Science & Education Development Institute in Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin; Dai Ningyi, interim associate dean of the Faculty of Engineering; and Wang Chunming, director of the Global Affairs Office.
