Chief Executive Edmund Ho said today (May 15) that service establishments of the European Union in Macau were welcomed as the SAR's role as a bridge to the Asian-Pacific region could be enhanced.

Speaking at the reception to celebrate the European Union Day, Mr. Ho said that the link between Macau and the EU had been well maintained with the aid of the Office of the European Commission in Hong Kong.

The reception was hosted by the Office of the European Commission in Hong Kong, with the presence of its head, Mr. David Ting.

Mr. Ho also said that the SAR could be a strategic partner of Europe Union in the Asia-Pacific region when it comes to economic development and cultural exchanges.

Mr. Ho pointed out that Macau would be a good choice if the European Union was intended in setting up service or other operation centers in China or the Asia-Pacific region, adding that privileges will be granted to these establishments.

Mr. Ho also noted that the partnership would benefit both Macau and the European Union.

Mr. Ho also said that business links and other cooperation between Macau and EU would be more intimate following China's accession to the World Trade Organization. Thus, it would be an important issue for the SAR government to look at how Macau could seize the imminent opportunities in the future, by exploiting its own privileges and its profound bond with the EU.

The Chief Executive is scheduled to visit Brussels in June, upon his visit, he will meet with high-ranking officials of the European Union.

Mr. Ho envisioned his official visit to Brussels in June as a good start, adding that further contacts of all level will be continued.

Macau maintains a trade and cooperation agreement with the European Union in Brussels, where it has a representative office.
