  • There are many great names recorded in Macao’s history. Some renowned figures were born in Macao and regarded Macao as a base for career development, while some were just passing through. In this week’s collection of images, we see some of the places with connections to these eminent historical figures and have the chance to learn more about the stories of the individuals. One of them is Macao-born composer Xian Xinghai.

  • Xian Xinghai, a renowned composer, was born in Macao and spent his childhood in the city, living in the vicinity of Rua do Praia do Manduco. His celebrated works include “Yellow River Cantata”. Visitors to the Xian Xinghai Memorial Museum can learn more about his life and artistic achievements.

  • The Mandarin's House is one of the important buildings making up the UNESCO-listed Historic Centre of Macao. The property is a former residence of Zheng Guanying, a prominent and pioneering thinker who had a profound influence on the history of modern China. His famous work "Warnings in Times of Prosperity" is thought to have been written in that location while he was in residence. The work shaped the thinking of the Qing Dynasty leader, Emperor Guangxu, and the views of millions of people.

  • George Chinnery, a famous British painter, lived in the Parish of São Lourenço during his stay in Macao. Chinnery died in 1852 and his remains were buried in Macao’s Protestant Cemetery, which is next to Camões Garden.

  • In 1892 Sun Yat-sen was working as a volunteer doctor at the Kiang Wu Hospital and was a pioneer in delivering conventional medical services in Macao. He later established the Chong Sai Pharmacy in Rua das Estalagens and a clinic in Senado Square.

  • Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci arrived in Macao in 1582. He learned Chinese, with the aim of preaching to local Chinese people and of promoting exchange between Eastern and Western cultures. Today, there is a bronze statue of Matteo Ricci located at Calçada de S. Paulo.

  • Pictured is a bust of Luís de Camões in the Gruta de Camões located in Camões Garden. According to legend, the Portuguese poet lived in Macao for two years in the mid-16th century and completed his epic work "The Lusiads" in the pictured grotto.

  • British priest Robert Morrison arrived in Macao in 1807 as a missionary. He translated and published the Bible and developed a Chinese-English dictionary. His remains, and those of his wife and a son, lie in the Macao Protestant Cemetery, behind the Protestant Chapel, also known as the Morrison Chapel.

  • General Ye Ting, one of the founders of the People's Liberation Army of the People’s Republic of China, spent seven years living in Macao with his family. From 2006, the Macao SAR Government has carried out a series of restoration projects in his former home, and opened the property to the public in 2014. A bronze sculpture of General Ye is in the front yard.

  • Lin Zexu, an Imperial Commissioner of the Qing Dynasty, arrived in Macao in 1839 for an inspection visit and to ban the opium trade in the city. He met with representatives of the Portuguese administration at the Lin Fong Temple, to inform them of the imperial edict about prohibition of the trade. Today, a Lin Zexu Memorial Museum is located near the Lin Fong Temple.
