  • The building that formerly housed the Chong Sai Pharmacy is located at No. 80 Rua das Estalagens. It was built before 1892. The building is typical of local traditional shophouses.

  • Dr Sun Yat-sen established the Chong Sai Pharmacy on the site and ran it for a period from 1893 onward. It was one of the first recorded examples in Macao’s history of a pharmacy or clinic that offered Western-style medical services while being operated by an ethnic-Chinese doctor.

  • The building changed hands a number of times over the years, being variously inherited, sold, or rented out. At times it was used either as a Taoist hall or for textile business.

  • The Macao SAR Government acquired the building in 2011 and carried out restoration and refurbishment.

  • The Government’s effort included creation of several display areas and some public service facilities.

  • The former pharmacy has been open to the public since December 2016, following completion of conservation work.

  • The building now houses exhibition sections showing: archaeological artefacts; renovation techniques employed during the refurbishment process; and some of the building’s architectural features.

  • The former Chong Sai Pharmacy has several exhibits on display, including an exhibition combining a commemoration of the 150th anniversary of Dr Sun’s birth with information about the conservation of the building. The exhibition materials enable visitors to have a fresh understanding of the role of Dr Sun in the history of Macao, as well as the characteristics and architectural features of a traditional shophouse.
