  • The Museum of Taipa and Coloane History is a resource enabling the public to gain a better understanding of the life of the people living in those formerly-separate island communities during recent and contemporary times.

  • The two-storey Museum of Taipa and Coloane History consists of nine exhibition rooms. The entire first floor is dedicated to archaeological findings from Coloane and Taipa. Visitors can gain insights into the prehistoric history and cultures of the islands through relics from the New Stone Age era unearthed in Coloane, and objects such as porcelain shards, money and coins dating from either the Ming or the Qing dynasties.

  • Under transparent flooring can be seen evidence from the first recorded site of archaeological excavation site in Taipa.

  • A collection of old documents and maps gives a detailed account of changes to the landscape in Taipa and Coloane over the years.

  • The exhibition on the museum’s second floor features two objects from Taipa’s Tin Hau Temple – a bell and a stele. The temple is the oldest of its kind in Taipa.

  • The museum also displays tools used by villagers in Taipa and Coloane in the past. Items including a stone milling device, oyster knives and bamboo baskets were used for local traditional activities such as production of shrimp sauce, oyster harvesting, fishing, and farming.

  • Visitors can learn about Taipa and Coloane’s four major local industries in the past: farming, fishing, firecracker manufacture and boatbuilding.

  • Several scale models of various types of boat are exhibited in the museum, allowing visitors to gain a deeper understanding of Taipa and Coloane’s traditional boatbuilding industry.

  • An exhibition room in the museum retains the original furnishings of a conference room used by the former Municipal Council of the Islands during the 1950s. It aims to show visitors how things were run by that former administrative body for the islands, compared to today.
