The centre of the urban area in Coloane is a popular tourist destination in Macao. To improve the recreational spaces on the streets and optimise the visitor experience, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) has recently beautified the stilt house in Rua dos Navegantes, n.º X-28 by a “micro-renewal and light renovation” approach. The project preserved the original architectural character of the stilt house located by the shore without altering its structure. Art installations are used to recreate the landscape of the district in the old days, complemented by the scenes of fishermen’s lives of yesteryear, thereby constructing sedentary leisure spaces imbued with the charm of a fishing village. As the beautification project has completed, the site is officially open to the public, welcoming the visit by members of the public and tourists during the National Day Golden Week.

Rua dos Navegantes in Coloane is Macao’s most representative street situated in a traditional fishing village. Its cluster of stilt houses by the shore carries the invaluable maritime culture and the memories of the fishing community in Macao. The beautification project involves adding winnowing baskets and conical hats woven from bamboo to the façade of the stilt house, accentuated by the word “Coloane” in Chinese and Portuguese. Bamboo installations in Chinese and Portuguese styles are also set up at the outdoor planters along with exhibition panels and illuminations to create photo-taking spots under the theme of fish stalls. Fish traps, fish boat lights, wooden fish ornaments and other retro fishing items are placed inside the house, recreating the lifestyle of the fishermen in the old days. The introduction about the route of “Taking a Walk Through the Streets of Macao” is also available on-site, allowing visitors to learn about the history of the Coloane fishing village.

When exploring the urban area of Coloane, members of the public and tourists can visit the stilt house in Rua dos Navegantes, n.º X-28 as a stop besides the Coloane Pier, Sam Seng Temple, and other attractions, so as to enjoy the fishing-village-themed walking route and to further discover the unique charm of Coloane’s fishing village in details.
