The University of Macau (UM) held the Academic Prize Presentation Ceremony 2026 today (29 May) to present 15 academic prizes to 49 graduating students in various disciplines in recognition of their outstanding academic performance. Throughout this academic year, the university has offered more than 60 types of scholarships and academic prizes, with a total value over MOP 4.5 million, benefiting more than 400 students.
Speaking at the event, Mok Kai Meng, vice rector of UM, congratulated the awardees and thanked the donors for their support. He said that UM is actively integrating into the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and supporting the construction of the Macao-Hengqin International Education (University) Town. As the first university in Macao to extend operations into the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, UM will seize the opportunities presented by its two campuses to establish Macao and Hengqin as international hubs for high-calibre talent and support the national strategies of building a strong educational system, greater scientific and technological strength, and a quality workforce. Mok encouraged all awardees to continue striving for excellence and to pay closer attention to the development of Macao, the country, and the wider world. He also called on them to apply their knowledge for societal benefit, give back to their alma mater, play a part in Macao’s development, integrate into and support national development, and engage globally with an open and forward-looking mindset to become pioneers and leaders who can drive societal progress and shape the future.
Ngou Man Hei, a graduating student from the Faculty of Science and Technology and Cheng Yu Tung College, was awarded a scholarship in recognition of his outstanding academic performance. He expressed his gratitude to UM for providing a wealth of educational resources, including a wide range of engaging and practical courses, as well as well-equipped facilities. He added that the lectures had enabled him to develop an understanding of rigorous mathematical proof and its real-world applications, equipping him with strong problem-solving skills. This also led to his excellent results in the Chinese Mathematics Competition for College Students. Furthermore, the holistic educational environment at his residential college equipped Ngou with a wider set of competencies beyond academic knowledge. He joined the college’s entrepreneurship team, where he gained insight into the different problem-solving approaches of peers from various disciplines. Notably, he and his teammates secured a second prize in an entrepreneurship competition held during the ‘Start-Up Weekday’ training camp. Ngou was also a member of the String Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra of UM, where he gained hands-on experience in musical performance, stage management, and ensemble management, and had the opportunity to perform in concerts. Looking ahead, Ngou plans to pursue further studies to delve deeper into the world of mathematics.
A total of 15 academic prizes were presented at this year’s ceremony: Henry Fok Foundation Academic Prize, Bank of China Academic Prize, Luso International Bank Academic Prize, MECOM Power – Hung Yip Group Academic Prize, BNU Academic Prize, Akrostar Academic Prize, Choi Kai Yau Academic Prize, Lou Tou Vo Mathematics Academic Prize, Jorge Alvares Foundation Academic Prize, Wu Zhiwei Group Academic Prize, WICH Law Firm and Private Notary Academic Prize, X Fintech Asia Academic Prize, LECM Academic Prize, ERS Academic Prize, and MIL Law Office Academic Prize.
