The University of Macau (UM) hosted the 11th Asia Conference on Power and Electrical Engineering (ACPEE 2026). The conference brought together more than 250 scholars, researchers, and industry professionals from 20 countries and regions, including Macao, Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland, South Korea, Singapore, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Brazil, and Canada. Attendees explored emerging research areas in smart grids, energy resilience, and low-carbon development, with a view to reinforcing Macao’s role as a premier hub for energy technology exchange in the Asia-Pacific region.

Yonghua Song, rector of UM and director of the State Key Laboratory of Internet of Things for Smart City, said in his speech that the development of next-generation power systems with an increasing proportion of renewable energy has become a major direction. He noted that this transition lies at the heart of green and low-carbon development of energy, and is central to establishing clean, low-carbon, safe, and efficient energy systems. He added that continued efforts should be made to advance the translation of scientific innovation into practical applications and address global energy challenges.

Themed ‘Next-Generation Power Systems: Resilience, Intelligence and Integration’, the conference focused on engineering research in smart grid technologies, sustainable energy systems, and the Internet of Things for smart cities. The programme included keynote sessions, special sessions, and technical sessions. Industry experts delivered keynote speeches on emerging technologies in power and energy engineering. The aim was to provide a platform for electrical engineers and researchers to share the latest research findings, gain insights into international academic frontiers, and foster closer collaboration.

Keynote speakers included: Pierluigi Mancarella, chair professor at The University of Melbourne; Wen Yonggang, professor and president’s chair at Nanyang Technological University; Dipti Srinivasan, professor at the National University of Singapore; Kashem Muttaqi, Distinguished Professor at the University of Wollongong; Kim Chul-Hwan, professor at Sungkyunkwan University; Zhang Yi, vice president of research and development and chief technology officer of RTDS Technologies; Ding Yi, professor at Zhejiang University; Xu Zhao, professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University; and Lin Jin, associate professor at Tsinghua University. They offered in-depth insights on the development and implementation of next-generation power systems, contributing their expertise to innovation and application in the field of electrical and energy engineering.

In addition, the conference featured a ‘Three-Minute Research Presentation Competition’, which was designed to provide an international platform for young researchers to showcase their research findings and enhance their academic presentation skills, while fostering academic exchange. Open to master’s and PhD students from universities worldwide, the competition centred on cutting-edge topics such as integrated energy system modelling, power system resilience and security, advanced power conversion systems and equipment, as well as interdisciplinary fields integrating energy, information, materials, and intelligence.

The conference was supported by the Economic and Technological Development Bureau of the Macao SAR government, the Commerce and Investment Promotion Institute of the Macao SAR, the IEEE Power & Energy Society, the Chinese Society for Electrical Engineering, Auckland University of Technology, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, the Hong Kong Society of Mechanical Engineers, the Macao Institution of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, the IEEE Macau Power and Energy Society/Power Electronics Society Joint Chapter, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Tianjin University, Chongqing University, South China University of Technology, Shanghai University of Electric Power, Companhia de Electricidade de Macau, Nanjing rtunit Information Technology Co Ltd, and Hitachi Energy Hong Kong Limited.
