Macao Archives hosts “Macao Illustrated - Exhibition of City Plans and Architectural Drawings from the Macao Archives’ Collection” next month

To celebrate “China Cultural and Natural Heritage Day” and the “International Archives Day”, the Macao Archives (AM) under the auspices of Cultural Affairs Bureau will organize the exhibition “Macao Illustrated - Exhibition of City Plans and Architectural Drawings from the Macao Archives’ Collection” from 10 June to 3 December 2017. The exhibition will be inaugurated on Friday, 9 June, at 6pm, at the Macao Archives.

“Macao Illustrated - Exhibition of City Plans and Architectural Drawings from the Macao Archives’ Collection” includes a selection of about 60 city plans and architectural drawings kept in the Macao Archives, which will be organized by category to enable visitors to trace the history of Macao’s evolvement and gain a concrete understanding of the city’s development and changes from the late 19th century to the middle of the 20th century. In addition, the plans and drawings show the characteristics of edifices in Macao and reflect that different architectural designers, who  adopted a variety of design languages in their works, keeping pace with international trends and exploring the possibilities of a fusion of Eastern and Western architectural elements.

Several lectures will be held during the exhibition period. The first lecture entitled “A review of Macao’s urban and architectural development from late 19thcentury to early 20th century through Macao Archives’ plans and drawings collection”, conducted by architect Lui Chak Keong, will be held on Saturday, 17 June, at 3pm, at the Macao Archives, exploring the city plans and architectural drawings. The first part of the lecture will introduce Macao’s urban renewal in the early days as reflected from the plans of St. Lazarus’ District, Almeida Ribeiro Avenue, Mong Ha District, and among others. The second part of the lecture will feature designs of typical buildings, allowing the public to have a better understanding of the city’s development in the early 20th century from an architectural design perspective. The lecture will be conducted in Cantonese. Admission is free. All are welcome to participate.

“Macao Illustrated - Exhibition of City Plans and Architectural Drawings from the Macao Archives’ Collection” is open daily from 10am to 6pm, and is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
