The second day of the second lunar month is traditionally celebrated as the birthday of God Tou Tei (the Earth God).

Every year, the management committee of Foc Tac Temple in the Horta da Mitra neighbourhood organises a series of festive events, bringing a vibrant celebratory atmosphere to the local community.

This year’s festivities take place from 18 to 22 March. They include: the Opera for Appeasing Gods (a performance of plays to celebrate the birth of a divinity); deity worship and blessings; lion and golden dragon performances; and a festive banquet for senior citizens.

This year’s celebration is especially significant, marking the 140th anniversary of the establishment of Horta da Mitra neighbourhood’s Foc Tac Temple, and the fifth anniversary of the inscription of the “Belief and Customs of Tou Tei in Macao” on the National List of Representative Elements of Intangible Cultural Heritage of China.

The Horta da Mitra neighbourhood is home to many elderly people, and they uphold traditional festive customs, regularly worshipping the God Tou Tei (the Earth God).

The birthday celebrations strengthen community bonds and deepen the transmission of Macao’s cultural heritage.
