The first Legislative Elections after the establishment of Macau SAR will be held from 9 AM to 8 PM on 23 September.
In accordance with the Basic Law of the Macau SAR, there are totally 27 seats in the second Legislative Assembly. Among which directly elected seats and indirectly elected seats will both be increased from eight to 10, while the number of appointed seats will remain at seven.
106 candidates in 19 lists are to run for 20 elected seats in the coming elections. Among the 19 lists, 15 are to run for the 10 directly elected seats while the other four lists will run for the 10 indirectly elected seats. A total of 96 candidates are included in the 15 lists running for the directly elected seats, which is a historic record since direct legislative election was launched to Macau in 1976.
For the 10 indirectly elected seats representing business, labour, professional and welfare, cultural, educational and sports interests, 10 candidates have been included in the four lists.
There are some 160, 000 registered voters in Macau, about one third of the local population, of which 159,813 are nature persons, an increased of some 30,000 will vote in the directly election while 625 legal persons will vote in the indirectly election.
Due to the increase of registered electors, the Electoral Committee has chosen 169 polling stations throughout the SAR for the convenience of voters, a polling station is also set up in the Macau prison for prisoners who have been registered voters to cast their votes.
A series of arrangements such as free transportation was provided to make voting easy for public.
In order to facilitate the process of voting, traffics near polling station will be restricted and voters are encouraged to make use of public transportation.
Concerning election promotions, the committee has worked closely with other departments namely the Commission Against Corruption and the police to ensure that all promotional activities are fair and law abiding.
