Zhang Jianbo, a PhD student from the Department of Portuguese, Faculty of Arts and Humanities, University of Macau (UM), recently completed an oral defense for his thesis titled ‘Translation of Jorge Amado’s Works in China: A Study about the Relation between Translation and Power’, becoming the Portuguese department’s first PhD graduate in literary translation. 

The research study focuses on the translation of the Brazilian author Jorge Amado’s works in different historical periods in China, as well as on factors that have influenced literary translation in the Chinese context since 1949. Zhang’s supervisor is Yao Jingming, head of UM’s Department of Portuguese. His co-supervisor is Prof Carlos Gohn from the University of Minas Gerais (Brazil). 

Members of the Examination Committee included UM Vice Rector (Research) Rui Martins, Prof Fábio Alves from the Federal University of Minas Gerais, as well as Professor Yao Jingming, Associate Professor Maria José Grosso and Assistant Professor Roberval Silva from the UM’s Department of Portuguese.
