Along the years, the Government has been working with schools, community organizations and institutions to promote environmental protection, energy saving, water saving and other green concepts to the general public. In this connection, the Office for the Development of the Energy Sector (“GDSE”) has for five consecutive years been promoting energy-saving education and energy-saving culture in schools. This year, GDSE will continue to work with a number of schools in the organization of “Cultural Activities on Energy-Saving in School” and “Educational Activities for the Promotion of Energy-Efficiency in School”.
“Cultural Activities on Energy-Saving in School” aims to inspire students and encourage their personal participation and initiative to develop creativity and take concrete action towards energy conservation, so as to develop good energy-saving habits and create an energy-saving culture in school.
Pui Ching Middle School has already participated in the “Cultural Activities on Energy-Saving in School” program for the past three years. For the promotion of the energy-saving culture, Pui Ching Middle School will continue to organize a series of activities this year, including the introduction of environmental protection and energy-saving contents to the Chinese, English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Information Technology and General Knowledge subjects and activities, to ensure that teachers and students fully comprehend the meaning of energy-saving and cultivate energy-saving sense of responsibility.
In addition, contents of the Environmental Protection Convention will be affixed at the walls of each classroom, enumerating those environmental protection and energy-saving issues that one must specially pay attention to. Also, each student must rotate as “Energy-Saving Little Angel”. Each “Little Angel” is responsible for checking whether the lights and electric appliances of the classroom have been duly switched off and perform other related energy-saving duties. At the same time, there is also one “Energy-Saving Chief Angel” in each classroom, in charge of organizing and supervising the rotating works of the “Energy Saving Little Angels”. The school administration believes that the “Energy Savings Little Angel” program will monitor the implementation of the Environmental Protection Convention by both teachers and students, so as to implement the management of energy-saving in public spaces, as a mean to stimulate sense of responsibility and develop good habits in energy conservation.
In order to carry out a more effective implementation of the “Switch-Off the Light when Leaving the Room” campaign, teachers will regularly inspect each classroom to check whether the lights and electrical appliances have been duly switched off. The general results will be announced every week at the announcement board, so as to create sense of responsibility and good habits in energy-savings among teachers and students, on a comprehensive and long-term basis.
In order to further strengthen the promotion of cultural activities on energy-conservation in school, the GDSE has introduced an award to distinguish the school that has contributed the most towards the improvement of energy-saving equipments and facilities, the objective of which is to encourage schools to make improvements starting from the hardware, such as the gradual adoption of energy-saving lamps and other measures, to improve energy efficiency and conservation. With the combination of culture, facilities and software, it is expected that this concept, starting from school, will eventually be extended to family and the community. Currently, there are 14 primary and 16 middle schools participating in the “Cultural Activities on Energy Saving in School” program.
On the other hand, in order to continue to promote Macau as the environmental protection industry platform between China and the international market, the Government of Macao Special Administration Region (Macao SAR) will organize, for the third consecutive year, the “Macao International Environmental Protection Exhibition & Forum” (MIECF), from April 8 to 10 this year.
With a view of enhancing public awareness on environmental protection issues and to educate the public on how to enjoy green living, during this years´ MIECF, a Green Public Day has been specifically instituted. Parents are welcome to bring along their children to the Open Day (Green Public Day) on 10 April, and especially visit the environmental education area, to share with the younger generation the concept of “show concern to environmental protection, stay closer to nature and enjoy green life”, by means of fun games and exhibition materials with unique characteristics.
