Information from the Statistics and Census Service indicated that total land area of Macao measured 29.2 km2 as at the end of 2007, bringing its population density to 18,000/km2. Total lane length of public roads was 400.8 km, and the motor vehicle density was 435 vehicles/km. Meanwhile, the number of trees planted on the roadside totalled 15,640, up by 24.0% over 2006; the number of trees in the replantation area of the Islands increased slightly by 0.7% to about 470,000.
The level of air quality was classified as Good for about 60% of the total number of days in 2007 when the best air quality level was observed in July. The Northern District, Rua do Campo and Big Taipa Hill monitoring stations recorded 29 days, 20 days and 19 days respectively when the observed value of respirable suspended particulates was higher than the standard value. In 2007, the lowest pH value of rainwater was 3.6 (precipitation with pH value lower than 5.6 is classified as acid rain).
The quality of potable water of the respective distribution networks and the Water Treatment Plants was conformed to the standard according to the results of the analysis carried out by the Laboratory of the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau; besides, the salinity level of the potable water was classified as Low in 2007.
In addition, the approval rate of all the water samples taken from the 10 public swimming pools was over 90%. Water quality of Hac Sa and Cheoc Van beaches had been improved compared with 2006.
In 2007, the Companhia de Sistemas de Resíduos (CSR) collected 174,000 tonnes of domestic garbage and 69,000 tonnes of garbage from the business sector, up by 3.6% and 23.2% respectively over 2006. Meanwhile, volume of garbage sent to the Incineration Plant rose by 0.7% over 2006 to 288,000 tonnes. The average volume of waste water treated by all the Waste Water Treatment Plants (WWTP) in Macao increased by 10.5% to 168,000 m3 per day.
The Public Security Police received 3,579 cases of noise complaints in 2007, up by 9.3% year-on-year. At the same time, the Environment Council and the Tourist Office received 111 and 30 cases of noise complaints respectively. The principal causes of complaints included noises from construction works, karaoke, air conditioner, ventilation system, etc.
With regard to activities on environmental protection education, the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau and the Environment Council had organized 446 promotional activities in 2007, with total expenses amounting to MOP4.93 million and participation of more than 320,000 persons.
