The introduction of natural gas may lower electricity cost and protect the environment, said Secretary for Transport and Public Work Ao Man Long Monday.

Mr. Ao had attended the signing ceremony of a cooperation agreement between two Japanese companies and a local enterprise on the supply of natural gas.

Mr. Ao pointed out that the Government had no plan to monopolize the supply of natural gas. He said that the Government would perfect the market for investment by modifying the related laws.

The Secretary said that the introduction of natural gas might help to lower the electricity cost and would provide another choice for the citizen, besides it might benefit the future development of Macao's economy and protect the environment.

Meanwhile, Mr. Ao predicted that natural gas would be introduced in 2005.
