Members of the Electoral Committee visit potential schools chosen for setting up new polling stations in the Legislative Assembly election in September.
Due to the increase of registered electors, 40 to 45 more polling stations will be needed in the coming Legislative Assembly election in September, said Fong Man Chong, chairman of the Electoral Committee after a meeting yesterday.
Over 150 polling stations are expected to be set up throughout the SAR for the convenience of voters in the 23rd September election, said Mr. Fong, considered there are over 160,000 registered voter currently, and the experience from the 1996 election that voters have to wait for a longer time in some polling stations.
Mr. Fong also said that the budget of the committee has been set and the proposal will be submitted to the Government shortly. An increase of 20 to 30 percent will be proposed.
Representative of the Post Office was invited to the meeting to discuss the preparations for the extra demand on the postal services due to pre-election promotional mails. A proposal on the matter will be submitted to the committee later.
According to the new regulation, each participating list has the right to request the committee to mail a copy of their platform to the electors, with the condition of one copy for each elector.
