Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that visitor arrivals totalled 2,213,807 in May 2023, representing an upsurge of 268.5% year-on-year but a decrease of 2.6% month-on-month. Same-day visitors (1,124,977) and overnight visitors (1,088,830) soared by 213.4% and 350.2% year-on-year respectively. Meanwhile, the average length of stay of visitors increased by 0.3 day year-on-year to 1.2 days; the duration for overnight visitors (2.2 days) and same-day visitors (0.2 day) both went up by 0.1 day.

As regards source of visitors, number of visitors from mainland China jumped by 173.8% year-on-year to 1,474,304, with those travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme (840,797) surging by 377.3%. Visitors from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area increased by 77.2% year-on-year to 715,941, of whom 27.1% came from Zhuhai (193,944) and 21.0% from Guangzhou (150,260). Besides, visitors from Hong Kong (601,991) and Taiwan (31,537) rocketed by 962.3% and 473.7% year-on-year respectively.

Analysed by checkpoint, number of visitor arrivals by land hiked by 203.6% year-on-year to 1,743,740 in May; among them, 49.2% arrived through the checkpoint of Border Gate (857,436), 34.1% came via the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge (594,517) and 11.9% via the Hengqin port (206,774). In addition, visitor arrivals by sea and by air leapt by 1,287.2% and 3,877.7% year-on-year to 311,875 and 158,192 respectively.

In the first five months of 2023, number of visitor arrivals expanded by 205.9% year-on-year to 9,436,215; overnight visitors (4,904,039) and same-day visitors (4,532,176) jumped by 344.4% and 128.8% respectively. The average length of stay of visitors increased by 0.1 day to 1.3 days, with that of same-day visitors (0.3 day) rising by 0.2 day whereas that of overnight visitors (2.3 days) decreasing by 0.9 day.
