Macao’s security authorities are always ready to respond to any factor that could have a negative effect on community stability in Macao. The authorities have been paying close attention to such factors, including policies adopted by national governments elsewhere.

The Office of the Secretary for Security made the remarks in a statement issued today, in response to recent reports in local news outlets concerning the risk of terrorist attack in Macao.

Counter-terrorism is a top priority of the security authorities in the Macao Special Administrative Region.

The security authorities have been strengthening safety evaluation procedures, as well as enhancing strategies, enforcement efforts and police management regarding the risk of terrorism acts in Macao. Notwithstanding these efforts, the threat remains at a low level.

The police services have reinforced – particularly in recent years – safety monitoring efforts and enforcement action at all checkpoints, tourist attractions, casinos and other important facilities across the city. Meanwhile, the police have also stepped up intelligence exchanges with neighbouring countries and regions, as well as enforcement efforts in Macao’s waters.

Macao’s security authorities will continue – as before – closely to monitor developments externally and internally in the security field, and will take all appropriate measures to effect improvements in public safety. Such efforts are aimed at protecting the local community and promoting community safety and security, as Macao pushes forward with its development goal of becoming a world centre of tourism and leisure.
