Six students from the University of Macau (UM) recently won a first prize, a second prize, and two third prizes at the ‘Challenge Cup’ Contest, a national science competition, held in Guangzhou.

The ‘Challenge Cup’ Contest is considered the ‘Olympics’ of all science competitions in China. This year’s event is the largest in its history, attracting more than 2 million university students from over 2,000 higher education institutions in China. 1569 entries (58 from Hong Kong, 3 from Macao) from 528 institutions (7 from Hong Kong, 3 from Macao) made it to the preliminaries, while 783 entries from 318 institutions entered the final.

Luo weiwei and Feng Haitao from the Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences (ICMS) won the first prize in the Biological Sciences category. Another two students from the ICMS, namely Zhang weixiang and Liu xiaodan, won a second prize in the same category. Cheng Yue and Wong Ka Hou from the Faculty of Science and Technology both won a third prize in the Engineering and Technology category. Prof Chen Xiuping from the ICMS received an award for excellent supervision.
