Just one month before the opening of the 2010 Macao International Environmental Co-operation Forum and Exhibition (2010MIECF), the Macao SAR Government is in full swing in planning this annual environmental event.
In addition to large-scale exhibitions and specialized forums on environmental protection, on the opening day – April 8 –, the Organizers will hold a series of activities in connection with the “Green Business Co-operation Day”, to mark the start of the green economy business summit. During this event, several professionals in the environmental protection industry and representatives from several government agencies and organizations will deliver their keynote speeches, to share with the audience their unique perspectives and vision of what constitutes a green economy. The Organizers will also arrange comprehensive discussion sessions, to provide opportunities for the participants from Mainland China, European Union and Portuguese-Speaking Countries to interact.
“Green Business Co-operation Day” is jointly organized by China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), Macao Trade and Investment Promotion Institute (IPIM), Madrid Chamber of Commerce, Macao Chamber of Commerce, European Business Information Program (EUBIP) and European and Macao economic and trade departments and chambers of commerce.
BUSINESS MATCHING SERVICES TO BOOST BUSINESS COOPERATION
In order to continue to implement and develop Macao’s function as a regional trade and economic services platform, 2010MIECF will provide free-of-charge business matching services to enterprises from all over the world, to assist them to locate business partners and to promote their products and services. Based upon the cooperation projects, products and services provided by the participants, or projects, products and services that they are looking for, the Organizers will assist enterprises to find suitable partners through a dedicated online business matching service platform (http://bm.ipim.gov.mo) and other on-site activities.
As of today, the Organizers have gathered 161 investment projects from Mainland China and overseas, including projects from several local public utilities entities and environmental protection organizations from Mainland China. Last year, green business matching activities held during MIECF achieved outstanding results, having contributed to a total of over 360 business discussions, which resulted in the signing of cooperation protocols related to 20 projects, involving investments to the extend of MOP 2.5 billion.
MIECF CONTRIBUTES TO CIVIC EDUCATION
As in the past, in order to enhance public environmental awareness and to educate the public on how to enjoy green living, this year’s MIECF will continue to hold the “Green Public Day” and open the event to the public. Parents are welcome to bring along their children to attend the Public Open Day on April 10. A visit to the area dedicated to environmental protection education is especially recommended, to share with the younger generation the concept of “show concern about environmental protection, stay closer to nature and enjoy green life”, by means of fun games and exhibition materials with unique characteristics.
Furthermore, in order to allow participants from all over the world to understanding Macao’s dedication and support to issue of environmental protection, Macao Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA) will organize visits to the Macao Incineration Centre and Coloane Wastewater Treatment Plant. Expansion works of the Macao incinerator Centre were completed in 2008. Using advanced technology, its emission is within the standard set by the European Union and the noise level is kept to a low level. Apart from electricity for its own internal operations, the remaining 27.1 megawatts of electricity generated in the process are channeled to Macao’s public power grid. The centre has the capacity to treat a maximum of 1,728 ton of waste per day and it is expected that it will be able to meet the needs of Macao over the next decade.
Phase 1 of Coloane Wastewater Plant started operations in 1999, processing 20,000 cubic meters of sewage per day. In order to satisfy the development of the Cotai area, Macao SAR Government carried out construction works for Phase 2 of Coloane Wastewater in 2006, involving an investment of MOP 250 Million. Respective construction works were concluded in 2008, the total sewage processing capacity having now increased to 130,000 cubic meters per day.
