A bill that would give the law enforcement agencies more teeth in the fight against human trafficking should be passed before the end of the current legislative year in August.

The Secretary for Administration and Justice, Ms Florinda Chan, was speaking to reporters today after attending a seminar on the problems of human trafficking. She said she expected that the bill to be passed before the end of the current legislative year in August.

The Legislative Assembly passed the draft bill in its first reading last April. It is currently under review by the Assembly’s First Standing Committee.

A revised draft has been submitted to the Committee, which is now studying the proposed law in detail.

Ms Chan said that the Government had set up an inter-departmental committee last year to step up the fight against human trafficking, and urged to public to help fight this very serious crime.
