Judiciary ties between Macau and Portugal received a boost after local court representatives met with a delegation of Portuguese Supreme Court Justices visiting the Special Administrative Region today (November 11).
President of the Court of Final Appeal of the MSAR Sam Hou Fai organized the visit by the Portuguese delegation headed by the President of the Supreme Court of Justice, Jorge Alberto Aragao Seia.
Sam Hou Fai met with the delegation members and shared observations about both judiciary systems.
According to a joint statement released after the meeting, both parties considered fostering links for further cooperation between the MSAR and Portugal in order to enforce their Judiciary Cooperation Agreement signed last year in Lisbon.
They also agreed to promote the regular meeting of the Presidents of the Supreme Courts of Portuguese Speaking Countries and Territories, and to encourage the two governments to establish agreements for exchanging data and documents, extraditing fugitives and cooperating in various judicial matters.
Sam Hou Fai thanked the Portuguese judicial authorities for authorizing their magistrates to be of service to the SAR, and mentioned that he looks forward to continued cooperation in the future.
The delegation arrived at the Macao Jetfoil terminal yesterday afternoon for a three-day visit during which they will meet with the Chief Executive, Edmund Ho, and representatives from the Legislative Assembly, the Public Prosecution Office, the Commission Against Corruption and the Judicial Training Centre.
The Portuguese delegation had visited Beijing before visiting Macao.
