  • The Chapel of Our Lady of Penha sits atop Penha Hill. A chapel was first built on the site in 1622. The place of worship acquired its current form and appearance after a reconstruction process in 1935, occurring at the same time as that for the Bishop’s Residence. Locals also know Penha Hill as “Bishop’s Hill” thanks to the presence of the Bishop’s Residence.

  • At one end of the chapel roof stands a statue of Our Lady. To one side of it, is a bell tower.

  • The solemnity of the chapel interior offers a quiet place for the prayers of worshippers.

  • The Chapel of Our Lady of Penha and the Bishop’s Residence are included on Macao’s list of Classified Immovable Properties.

  • The chapel courtyard offers a panoramic view of the water courses of Nam Van and Sai Van; the three bridges linking Macao peninsula and Taipa, and the Inner Harbour.

  • In the chapel’s courtyard is a sea-facing marble statue of Our Lady of Lourdes.

  • Stairs lead down to a grotto in honour of Our Lady of Lourdes, commemorating the appearance of the Virgin Mary at Lourdes in France. There is an altar in the grotto, as well as a set of benches in front of it.

  • The Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Penha complex consists of recreational facilities and is an ideal location from which to observe the watercourses fringing Macao.

  • Penha Hill is partly covered by trees. The tranquillity of its location provides visitors a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy the scenic views of Macao. This could explain why Penha Hill was listed among the ‘Macao New Eight Scenic Spots’ in a community poll.
