The Fire Services Bureau and the Education and Youth Affairs Bureau co-organise school-holiday sessions for children concerning firefighter work. Aims are to encourage young people to use their long summer break fruitfully, and to promote among them awareness of fire safety. Here two students practise first-aid skills acquired during the course.

The three sessions of the course being held this summer are open to students from local high schools. A course participant tries on personal protective equipment for use in any cases of chemical spillage.

Under instruction from fire officers, course participants have opportunities to try rescue techniques involving ropes.

Fire officers brief some course participants on rescue equipment carried in one of their light vehicles used for responding to emergencies.

Participants learn how to handle fire hoses, pieces of equipment that can be used for extinguishing a variety of blazes.

The last day of the course features a team rescue exercise. Course participants wear firefighter gear and are joined by senior fire officers.

Thanks to this four-day experience, course participants get to learn more about firefighter work and first aid. It is hoped that – equipped with such experience – young people will be encouraged to be hard-working and selfless, with senses of teamwork and responsibility and with a willingness to contribute to society.
