  • Almirante Lacerda Municipal Market is known as the “Red Market” for the structure’s brightly-coloured façade. It is the only local wet market classified as being of architectural interest in Macao’s heritage list of buildings.

  • Construction of the three-storey building was completed in 1936. Outside the Red Market is an open-air bazaar held daily, with stalls selling fresh products and other household needs, such as fruits, flowers, snacks, and traditional dry goods.

  • The ground floor of the Red Market sells vegetables. Wide aisles separate each row of stalls. The spacious shopping environment is unique compared to other wet markets across the city.

  • Fresh seafood is sold in the basement of the Red Market.

  • Fish and other seafood is prepared for sale to shoppers

  • The Red Market has a wide array of seafood products at reasonable prices.

  • Fresh meat products, such as pork, beef and lamb, are on the first storey of the market.

  • The Red Market’s design incorporates several large windows by the central stairway, designed to maximise ventilation and to allow natural light into the building.

  • Redevelopment of the Red Market is about to take place and will take approximately one year. Once the work is completed, the Red Market will have air conditioners, lifts and barrier-free facilities. During the construction process, stalls are to relocate to the temporary Patane Market.
