Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the general unemployment rate for June-August 2020 was 2.8% and the unemployment rate of local residents was 4.0%, up by 0.1 and 0.2 percentage points respectively from the previous period (May-July 2020). Meanwhile, the underemployment rate increased by 0.4 percentage points to 3.7%.

Total labour force was 404,000 and the labour force participation rate was 70.2%. Total employment was 392,500 and number of employed residents totalled 276,600, down by 2,900 and 1,100 respectively from the previous period. Analysed by industry, employment in Gaming & Junket Activities and Hotels & Similar Activities decreased, while that in Restaurants & Similar Activities increased.

Number of the unemployed was 11,500, up by 400 from the previous period. With fresh graduates entering the labour market, the proportion of new labour market entrants seeking their first job increased by 6.8 percentage points to 16.0% of the total unemployed. Number of the unemployed population searching for a new job decreased by 500; most of the unemployed were previously working in Gaming & Junket Activities, Retail Trade and the Construction sector.

Number of the underemployed rose by 1,500 to 15,000, with the majority working in Gaming & Junket Activities and Hotels & Similar Activities.

In comparison with June-August 2019, the underemployment rate and the unemployment rate increased by 3.3 and 1.0 percentage points respectively, while the labour force participation rate dropped by 0.1 percentage point.
