Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that number of MICE events held in the second quarter of 2020 decreased by 89.4% (-319) year-on-year to 38 amid the ongoing pandemic, and number of participants and attendees declined by 93.9% to 22,000.

There were 36 meetings & conferences held in the second quarter, a drop of 309 year-on-year; number of participants fell by 96.4% to 1,996. Meetings & conferences with a duration of less than 4 hours totalled 25, with number of participants reducing by 85.7% to 1,370. The average duration of the meetings & conferences (0.7 day) shortened by 0.7 day year-on-year, and the total floor area used declined by 93.4% to 15,000 m².

Number of exhibitions in the second quarter dropped by 8 year-on-year to 2, and both of them were held by non-government organisations. Number of attendees totalled 20,000, a slip of 93.5%. The average duration of the exhibitions remained unchanged at 3.0 days, and the total floor area used reduced by 92.3% to 6,060 m².

According to the information on the 2 exhibitions, the receipts amounted to MOP 1.69 million, of which 90.6% were generated from rental of exhibition booths and the remainder was financial support from the government & other organisations. Meanwhile, expenditure of these exhibitions totalled MOP 1.89 million, which was mostly incurred on rental paid for the venue (35.7%) and installation, decoration & audio-visual performance, etc. (31.7%). After deducting expenditure as well as financial support from the government & other organisations from receipts, a negative value of MOP 0.36 million was recorded.

All of the 49 exhibitors that participated in the exhibitions in the second quarter were local exhibitors. In accordance with the information collected from 46 interviewed exhibitors, 99.9% of their receipts came from sales of goods, whereas their expenditure was mainly incurred on rental paid for exhibition booths (51.5% of total) and booth installation & decoration (39.2%). Regarding comments from the interviewed exhibitors, their satisfaction towards various facilities and services increased compared to the first quarter. The proportions of exhibitors who were satisfied with the hospitality of the organiser (97.8%), organisation of the event (95.7%) and promotion of the exhibitions (91.3%) rose by 32.5 percentage points, 33.8 percentage points and 34.5 percentage points respectively quarter-to-quarter.

In the first half year of 2020, a total of 152 MICE events were held, a decrease of 582 year-on-year; total number of participants and attendees fell by 85.2% to 102,000. Meetings & conferences (145) and exhibitions (5) reduced by 562 and 15 respectively year-on-year, with the respective number of participants (19,000) and attendees (82,000) declining by 86.6% and 84.6%. According to the information on the 5 exhibitions held by non-government organisations in the first half year, their receipts and expenditure amounted to MOP 6.59 million and MOP 4.98 million respectively. After deducting expenditure as well as financial support from the government & other organisations from receipts, these exhibitions recorded net receipts of MOP 0.72 million.
