The Chief Executive, Mr Chui Sai On, outlined two aspirations while planning the next phase of Macao’s contribution to the development of the country’s “Belt and Road” initiative.

Mr Chui shared his views on Thursday (3 October) during a plenary meeting of the Working Committee for the Development of “Belt and Road” Initiative. The meeting reviewed work carried out so far this year and discussed ideas for next year to foster Macao’s contribution to the initiative.

The first of the two aspirations mentioned during Thursday’s meeting by the Chief Executive – who also acts as the Committee’s Chairman – was that Committee members had to step up effort to make progress in relation to the “Belt and Road” initiative, while enhancing Macao’s overall capabilities.

The Committee would also need to give additional attention to the volatile economic conditions existing internationally, and note updates regarding the situation of the country. This was in order to serve the country’s development needs while delivering Macao’s strengths to that cause.

The second aspiration mentioned by Mr Chui was the need for further promotion effort in the local community in order for local people to make use of the opportunities arising from the “Belt and Road” initiative.

Committee members were urged to step up effort to ensure Macao’s own development mechanisms complemented the aims of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and Macao’s participation in the “Belt and Road” initiative.

Mr Chui additionally stated that the overall goals for Macao’s participation in the “Belt and Road” initiative were to consolidate the city’s inherent strengths while contribute to national development effort, amidst competition and cooperation taking place internationally and domestically.

He noted that work carried out so far had been progressive in nature. He added that an agreement signed in 2018 with the National Development and Reform Commission had created fresh impetus for Macao to contribute to the “Belt and Road” initiative.

During Thursday’s meeting, Committee members detailed the work carried out so far by Macao, and its respective contribution to Macao’s effort regarding the “Belt and Road” initiative. The Government’s effort included: participation in the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation; initiating and signing town-twinning schemes; holding a seminar regarding the “Belt and Road” initiative and Macao’s development; and attending the Conference on Overseas Chinese Pioneering and Development Tianjin China.
