The University of Macau (UM) Faculty of Arts and Humanities (FAH) recently held the Second UM Language and Culture Day. Themed ‘Value Your Own Language; Embrace Others’ Cultures’, this year’s event featured a variety of activities, including an international language and culture fair, cultural performances, and language workshops. Some students say that the event provided a platform for people from different cultural backgrounds to share their languages and cultures with one another.

Highlights of the event included a performance of the song ‘Auld Lang Syne’ in different languages delivered by UM faculty members and students, an international language and culture fair with booth games, food stalls, and demonstration of traditional clothes and cultural performances by faculty and students from different countries and regions.

Rodrigo Costa, a student from Cape Verde, says this event provided a great platform for students from different counties to share their cultures with others. Alex Wu, a student from the Department of English, says he is particularly impressed with the singing performance of ‘Auld Lang Syne’. He adds that the event demonstrates linguistic and cultural diversity of UM, which makes the university a great place for language learning. Participants hope this meaningful event will continue to be held next year.

Other activities at the event included ‘Lazy Sounds? Speak Proper Cantonese’, ‘Fala Português? – Let’s learn the basics’, ‘Self-Introduction in Japanese’, screening of Portuguese films Macanese in Macau – Renewing Identity, Language – Lives in Portuguese, Developing Skills in News, and workshops on English dubbing.
