The Municipal Affairs Bureau’s Department of Green Areas and Gardens is responsible for the maintenance of plants at ‘green-belt’ areas next to roadsides on Macao peninsula, and in the Islands District.

The daily tasks of the green areas and gardens team include watering, mowing lawns, clearing weeds, pruning trees, adding fertilisers, application of pesticide, and fresh planting.

The green areas and gardens team members must work in all weathers – come rain or sunshine – to make the local environment more pleasing for the city’s residents

The green areas and gardens team members are working under scorching sun during a period of extremely hot weather. They need to protect themselves from it as much as possible, stay hydrated at all times, and take rest breaks.

The "click click" of pruning shears is often heard as they pursue their work of making the green-belt zones neat and pretty.

Some green-belt zones are larger than others, and require a greater number of team members to work together on tidying tasks.

The green areas and gardens team is equipped with a variety of equipment: hedge shears, hoes, garden shears, rakes, and – in this picture – a hand push lawnmower.

The work of the streetside greening team requires meticulous attention. Even weeds found in gaps must be removed.

A straw hat is a useful accessory at work. It also acts as a marker, allowing colleagues and the public to see the hard-working staff some distance away.
