The 28thMacao Arts Festival (MAF), organized by the Cultural Affairs Bureau, proceeds this week with a diversified programme, including the closing performance The Seagull by the Reykjavik City Theatre from Iceland, as well as theatre, dance and music performances performed by local and foreign groups, not to be missed.
The classic The Seagull by Chekhov has been staged countless times. This production is directed by Lithuanian director Yana Ross and is performed by the Reykjavik City Theatre from Iceland. Awarded Best Director in the International Festival Kontakt of Torun, Poland, in 2016, Yana Ross is an acclaimed theatre director in the Scandinavian theatre circles for her unique style. Her adaptation The Seagull is recognized for its modern and surprising take, which moves the plot from a Russian country estate to Iceland to explore human nature from a unique perspective. The performance, to be held on 27 and 28 May at the Macao Cultural Centre Grand Auditorium, is certainly one of the shows that audience members must not miss.
In Double Bill by Hiroaki Umeda, to be held on 26 and 27 May, renowned choreographer Hiroaki Umeda presents not only his solo piece Holistic Strata, a piece that breaks down the human body’s barriers but also develops a brand new work with local dancers. Other extraordinary shows include: on 19 and 20 May, The Nether, portrays the seemingly limitless dividing line between the real and the virtual worlds, as well as Stormy Luck by Dóci Papiaçám di Macau Drama Group, which returns with another look at current local events; the ground-breaking Miss Revolutionary Idol Berserker, to be held from 19 to 21 May, offers viewers a mind-blowing experience of Japan; Chu Chan Wa and Macao Cantonese opera actors bring the Cantonese opera classic The Butterfly Lovers to the stage on 20 and 21 May; on 23 May, the National Peking Opera Company presents an abridged adaptation of the classic Lady Anguo while the Macao Orchestra presents the concert Resonance through Space-Time; as well as the children’s theatre reliant solely on hands and clay dolls A Mano from 26 to 28 May.
