  • In order to alleviate the traffic congestion on Macao’s existing three bridges, and improve the road traffic capacity between the Macao peninsula, Taipa, and Cotai, the MSAR Government is building a fourth cross-estuary bridge, east of the Friendship Bridge.

  • The new bridge runs from a reclamation area on the Macao peninsula side, known as New Urban Zone A, across to New Urban Zone E1, on Taipa. Via New Urban Zone A, the new bridge also links to the Macao landing point of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The carriageway crosses the channel to access the Outer Harbour and the Macao channel.

  • The bridge’s 3.1-kilometre main carriageway has a 2.9-km section rising above the maritime estuary. The section features two 280-metre-long spans, providing clearance for navigation channels.

  • The bridge will have a total of eight lanes for vehicles, four in each direction. Two lanes are reserved for motorcycles, and the other six are for cars and other four-wheeled traffic. There is no pedestrian access.

  • The bridge has roadside barriers against high winds that have the effect of lowering the impact of the prevailing wind on the bridge.

  • Seven main concrete columns supporting the bridge have been completed. The columns each require at least 1,500 cubic metres of concrete. The biggest column is 37.2 metres tall.
