The Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng, today said Macao would devote further effort – utilising the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone as a platform – in relation to cooperation on scientific and technological innovation within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (Greater Bay Area).

In addition, the Macao Special Administrative Region (MSAR) Government was committed to boosting scientific and technological innovation, to enhance the quality of its services and to advance people’s livelihoods and the economy.

The Chief Executive delivered a speech today at the opening ceremony of the 2021 China Internet Media Forum, held in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province. The forum is jointly organised by the Cyberspace Administration of China, the China Media Group, and Guangdong’s cyberspace affairs commission.

At the ceremony, Mr Ho mentioned that the Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, put forward ideas for developing a big data centre and an international innovation and technology hub. As such, the MSAR Government strove for advances in Macao’s scientific and technological development, while optimising the conditions and mechanisms for, respectively: a sustainable development of science, technology and innovation; encouraging enterprises to make greater use of technology in business operations and to upgrade such technology; and ensuring Macao explored a market-orientated industry-academia-research model.

Mr Ho also talked about how the Internet had evolved as a major means of obtaining information. Thus, a lawful, orderly approach to use of online resources could help unite the people, and concentrate the power of the community. With the growing influence of online media, came the need to highlight such media’s social responsibility, and the need for such media to act in a moral way, adhering to law, rather merely focusing on their own economic benefit.

The world had seen a complex situation evolving regarding safety of people while online – in terms of the dissemination of disputed information and the threat of online attack faced by public- and private-sector interests worldwide, Mr Ho said.

He went on to elaborate regarding steps taken to ensure online safety in Macao, and to safeguard the overall security of the community and of the country. The MSAR Government would formulate a framework policy concerning online safety, in line with Macao’s overall development direction and practical needs. This was in order to promote wider community participation in maintaining online safety, and to elevate the overall level in Macao of safety online.

Officials attending today’s opening ceremony for the 2021 China Internet Media Forum, included the Secretary of the Guangdong Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Mr Li Xi. Other officials delivering a speech  at the ceremony included: the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor (via video link); Vice Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee and President and Editor-in-Chief of China Media Group, Mr Shen Haixiong; Vice Minister of the Publicity Department of the CPC Central Committee, Head of the Office of the Central Cyberspace Affairs Commission and of the Cyberspace Administration of China, Mr Zhuang Rongwen; Editor-in-Chief of Xinhua News Agency, Mr Fu Hua; and the Governor of Guangdong, Mr Ma Xingrui.

Mr Ho arrived in Guangzhou on Wednesday (24 November). That day, he  officiated at the launch of the 4K-definition documentary "Crunch and Munch in Macao," which has China Media Group as a co-producer, and celebrates the 22nd anniversary of Macao’s return to the motherland.
