The Chief Executive, Mr Ho Iat Seng, met with leading officials of the Zhejiang Government in Hangzhou city, Zhejiang Province, in order to exchange views on how to extend bilateral ties. Mr Ho was there after attending, in Shanghai, the opening ceremony of the 4th China International Import Expo (CIIE).

Mr Ho visited Shanghai and Hangzhou from 4 to 7 November. Mr Ho had been invited by the Minister of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China, to attend the CIIE opening ceremony.

In Hangzhou, Mr Ho had a meeting with the Secretary of the Zhejiang Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Zhejiang Provincial People's Congress, Mr Yuan Jiajun.

The Chief Executive said Macao and Zhejiang enjoyed close relations and cooperation; and he looked forward to seizing development opportunities with Zhejiang and fostering reciprocal ties. In particular, matters relating to Hangzhou’s digital economy, smart city development and social governance were good reference points for Macao. Hangzhou’s experience in those fields would lead Macao and Zhejiang to deeper and broader cooperation for mutual beneficial development, Mr Ho added.

The Chief Executive additionally talked about Macao’s effort in accelerating development of the Guangdong-Macao Intensive Cooperation Zone in Hengqin, saying Macao was welcoming this major opportunity for advances in socio-economic development.

Mr Ho also gave a briefing on Macao’s epidemic-control and -prevention work. He spoke highly of Zhejiang’s epidemic-control effort, and the province’s latest achievements in socio-economic development.

Speaking in the meeting, Secretary Yuan said Zhejiang had stepped up effort regarding high-quality development, and was committed to introducing technological reforms in order to optimise public services and the digital economy.

Secretary Yuan said Zhejiang and Macao enjoyed close links for a long time. He said the two sides saw huge potential in economic and trade-related matters, and promotion of people-to-people exchanges. Mr Yuan said the two sides would strengthen cooperation and complement their respective advantages, with a view to making further contributions in order jointly to serve the country’s overall development.

While in Hangzhou, the Chief Executive visited a number of places, accompanied by Zhejiang Government officials. The places included: a public service centre in Hangzhou, in order to get a better understanding regarding the operation of the local integrated platform for government services; the patriotism education demonstration base set up at Nanhu Revolutionary Memorial Hall; and the Red Boat, the site of the first National Congress of the CPC, to understand better the story of the founding and development of the CPC.

Mr Ho also paid a visit to a base for the “Hangzhou City Brain” system, in order to learn about the latest smart city development in Hangzhou. He also visited Hangzhou Urban Balcony, to get a better grasp of urban planning work in relation to enhancing people’s well-being; and Bin Fen Future Community in Binjiang District, in order to get a better understanding of a new model for community services designed to benefit the public and provide them with greater convenience.

Macao officials joined the meeting and visits in Hangzhou included the Secretary for Administration and Justice, Mr Cheong Weng Chon, and the Chief-of-Office of the Chief Executive’s Office, Ms Hoi Lai Fong.
