Organized by the Macao Museum of Art (MAM) under the auspices of the Cultural Affairs Bureau (IC, from the Portuguese acronym), and co-organized by the Architects Association of Macau, the “17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia – Exhibits from Macao, China” was opened to the public on 22 May in Venice, presenting the relationship between architecture, land reclamations, collective memory and urban life from multiple perspectives, offering visitors from different parts of the world a picture of the cross-border life in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, and exploring the infinite possibilities of “Connectivities”.

This year marks the fourth year of organizing Macao architects to participate in the world-leading “International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia” as representatives of “Macao, China”, IC once again strives to present projects by Macao architects in the international arena. The exhibition team comprises the curator, Carlos Marreiros, and young local architects Ho Ting Fong, Che Chi Hong, Lao Man Si and Chan Ka Tat. In response to the theme of the Biennale “How will we live together?”, the exhibition team showcases four works of different styles under the theme “Connectivities: Living beyond the boundaries – Macao and the Greater Bay Area”, in a bid to give an overview of the future urban landscape of Macao and to reflect on the symbiosis and challenges arising from the in-depth integration of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Founded in 1980, the “International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia” is one of the most important architectural and artistic events today. This edition of the Biennale, originally scheduled for May of last year, was postponed to this year due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, with a total of 112 entities from 46 countries and regions, including Macao. In order to cooperate with the epidemic prevention and control efforts and deepen the public’s understanding of Macao’s architectural art, the related works are presented at the Macao-China Pavilion in Venice through electronic media, and the physical works will be exhibited in Macao later.

The “17th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia – Exhibits from Macao, China” is held from 22 May to 21 November, and is open daily from 10am to 6pm (local time) and closes on Mondays. The exhibition hall is located in front of the Arsenale, the main building of the Biennale (address: Arsenale, Campo della Tana, Castello 2126/A, Venice, Italy).
