Restaurants and similar establishments survey 2016

Information from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that a total of 2,265 restaurants, eating & drinking places and cooked-food stalls in municipal markets were operating in 2016, down by 19 year-on-year; total number of persons engaged increased by 85 to 32,398. Receipts of the industry amounted to MOP 10.69 billion, up by 6.5% year-on-year; expenditure grew by 5.2% to MOP 10.46 billion. Gross Value Added that measures the sectoral contribution to the economy went up by 13.0% year-on-year to MOP 4.03 billion, while Gross Fixed Capital Formation decreased by 45.3% to MOP 330 million.

Number of restaurants and eating & drinking places recorded a decline for the first time since 2012, down by 20 year-on-year to 2,189; meanwhile, number of persons engaged went up by 101 to 32,260. Receipts (MOP 10.65 billion) and expenditure (MOP 10.43 billion) of these establishments increased by 6.4% and 5.1% respectively year-on-year. Local-style Cafes, Congee & Noodle Shops totalled 824, decreasing remarkably by 97 compared to 2015; receipts (MOP 2.43 billion) and expenditure (MOP 2.29 billion) of these establishments rose by 1.6% and 0.1% respectively. Number of Chinese Restaurants grew by 35 year-on-year to 598, with their receipts (MOP 4.53 billion) and expenditure (MOP 4.44 billion) rising by 9.2% and 7.3% respectively. Number of Western Restaurants increased by 26 year-on-year to 192; receipts (MOP 1.16 billion) and expenditure (MOP 1.11 billion) of these restaurants registered growth of 4.5% and 1.0% respectively.

As regards expenditure of restaurants and eating & drinking places, Purchase of Goods (MOP 3.83 billion), Compensation of Employees (MOP 3.77 billion) and Operating Expenses (MOP 2.83 billion) rose by 2.0%, 9.8% and 3.6% respectively year-on-year. Operating Expenses were mainly incurred on Rent of Establishments (41.8% of total), down marginally by 0.5% year-on-year to MOP 1.18 billion, followed by those on Electricity Charges at MOP 362 million, up by 7.1%.

Gross Value Added of restaurants and eating & drinking places amounted to MOP 4.01 billion, up by 13.0% year-on-year. As the growth in receipts outpaced that in expenditure, Gross Surplus surged by 106.0% year-on-year to MOP 244 million, and Gross Surplus Ratio (2.3%) went up by 1.1 percentage points. Meanwhile, Gross Fixed Capital Formation plunged by 45.3% year-on-year to MOP 330 million, due to a decrease in acquisitions of fixed assets such as machinery, equipment and shops in 2016.

A total of 76 cooked-food stalls were operating in municipal markets in 2016, an increase of 1 year-on-year; number of persons engaged decreased by 16 to 138. Receipts (MOP 41.35 million) and expenditure (MOP 27.62 million) of the stalls went up by 23.6% and 35.2% respectively year-on-year. Gross Value Added rose by 7.5% year-on-year to MOP 16.40 million. Moreover, Gross Surplus (MOP 13.73 million) grew by 5.4%, while Gross Surplus Ratio (33.2%) dropped by 5.7 percentage points.

Coverage of the Restaurants and Similar Establishments Survey comprised licensed restaurants, eating & drinking places, and cooked-food stalls in municipal markets in 2016, excluding restaurants and similar facilities directly operated by hotels and gaming establishments, as well as street hawker stalls.
