Shiwan ceramics are famous for the richness of their glazed colours and the diversity of colour tone, as well as the delicate representation of expression in the figurines.

The subjects depicted in the figurines are mostly drawn from either folklore, operas or narrative stories. They include historical figures, national heroes, ordinary people drawn from urban life, and statues of foreign children.
